Lucy Frazer MP Speaks Up on Behalf of Cystic Fibrosis Sufferers in her Constituency
Lucy Frazer MP, this week, met with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, manufacturers of cystic fibrosis drug, Orkambi, to discuss the current situation regarding its availability in the UK.
Orkambi is hailed as a precision medicine that tackles the underlying cause of Cystic Fibrosis rather than merely managing the symptoms.
Although the drug is licensed in the UK, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has so far not recommended it for general use within the NHS due to the benefits not justifying the costs.
Lucy said, “Constituents of mine have drawn my attention to the need to bring about a resolution to ongoing negotiations between drug manufacturer Vertex and NHS England, with regards to Orkambi being made available for general use on the NHS.
My conversation with Vertex gave me the opportunity to press the importance of reaching a timely resolution so that cystic fibrosis patients in England can get access to this potentially life-enhancing drug.”
