The Women and Broadband Challenge Fund was set up to help women across the UK to grow their businesses online, gain access to superfast broadband and to help women returning to work to improve their digital skills.
On Tuesday 14th July the Government Equalities Office, in conjunction with the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, announced funding of £49,390 for female-led Cambridgeshire-based businesses in 2015-16. This follows an investment of £75,000 in 2014-15, which helped 1,500 women across the county.
The Cambridgeshire programme will deliver a series of workshops and roadshows and will promote the ‘connection voucher scheme’ to increase the number of women-led businesses benefitting.
Following the news, Lucy Frazer, MP for South East Cambridgeshire, said, “I welcome the Government’s commitment to helping women in business with this funding; access to superfast broadband is important to any local business and this will be a great help to those women who run businesses or who are returning to work. More generally we have much more work to do to ensure access to superfast broadband across Cambridgeshire, but this is a sign that ministers recognise the importance of this issue.”
