I am delighted to have been re-elected as your MP and want to start by thanking everyone in South East Cambridgeshire who voted for me on June 8th.
Elections are, of course, won by teams, not individuals, and I very much appreciate all the support I have received from so many in the community.
I want to let you know what my priorities are now that I am back in parliament and also reflect on the difficult weeks we have all recently witnessed.
I am picking up where I left off working on all the key campaigns I was engaged with prior to the election.
Improving infrastructure remains high on my agenda and I will continue to drive forward all the projects that are at different stages of development including the Ely bypass, improvements to the A10 and the A14/142 junction and building a station in Soham. A couple of weeks ago I met with our new regional Mayor, James Palmer, to see how we can combine forces and be even more effective working together on these and other projects.
I will continue to fight to ensure that increased funding for our schools is forthcoming having been underfunded for so many years. I have already raised this with the new First Secretary of State, Damian Green, and am feeding back what I heard on the doorsteps over the weeks of campaigning, I spoke on the issue of education in the debate on the Queen’s Speech and raised once again the issue of fairer funding. I will re-engage with all the key players responsible for superfast broadband reaching every part of our constituency and re-energise my bid for our area to become a 5G mobile pilot area. Since being re-elected, I have written to Matt Hancock MP, the relevant Minister, to reinforce this.
I will keep close to the LUCS pilot at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Ely and be involved as and when needed to enable a positive outcome.
In other news, I am honoured to have been appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary to David Lidington MP, the Secretary of State for Justice and look forward to all that that entails.
I am so disappointed to have lost some excellent colleagues and friends who lost their seats in the recent election. We need to learn from the mistakes we made in the campaign to ensure we fight the next election on a stronger footing.
The recent terror atrocities and the unimaginable tragedy of Grenfell Tower have unfortunately united us all in grief in recent weeks. In this atmosphere of sorrow and fear, the strength of human courage and kindness has risen to the fore and helps to restore our faith in humanity.
Terror is designed to tear our communities apart. But whether at the recent vigil in Ely in honour of the Manchester and London Bridge victims or the numerous village fetes I have attended and will attend over the coming weeks, I am heartened by the way our community comes together.
On that note, I would like to wish you all a happy and peaceful summer and, as always, if you would like to get in touch with me about anything, please email me at [email protected].
